Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) is a Mexican holiday celebrated widely across the United States. It is a day full of Mexican cuisine, tequila, sombreros and mariachi music. But, while many people participate in the fiesta, most do not know what they are actually celebrating.
Commonly believed to be Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is actually the commemoration of the Battle of Puebla. This is the battle in which the Mexican forces defeated the French army. The “Batalla de Puebla” came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.
This year’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations are especially important because it is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. In honor of this special date in history, extra parades and events, amongst many other festivities, will take place in Mexico and the United States, including our own! So, come out and join us in celebrating the fifth of May! Listed below is our schedule of Cinco de Mayo events!
